Indian Overseas Bank HQ

Remedial waterproofing of 34,432 sqft across three towers at the 60+ year old IOB Headquarters in Chennai.

Amchem undertook a significant restoration project at the Indian Overseas Bank Headquarters in Chennai, a landmark structure with over six decades of architectural heritage. This complex project involved comprehensive waterproofing treatment across 34,432 square feet, encompassing three distinct towers of this historic building, which has been a symbol of banking excellence in South India since its construction in 1962.

The project presented unique challenges due to the building's age and architectural significance. The structure's Indo-Saracenic architectural style, characterized by its distinctive domes and ornate details, required careful consideration during the waterproofing process. Our team encountered various technical challenges, including deteriorated concrete surfaces, multiple previous waterproofing layers, and active leakage points that had developed over the years.

Our technical team employed the advanced Drythane waterproofing system, specifically chosen for its ability to adapt to the structural characteristics of heritage buildings while providing superior protection against water ingress. The system's unique formulation allows it to bond effectively with aged surfaces while maintaining flexibility to accommodate the natural movement of the structure. We implemented a multi-layer application approach, incorporating reinforcement materials at critical junctions and ensuring seamless integration with existing building elements.

The restoration process involved several key phases:

  • Comprehensive surface preparation including removal of deteriorated materials
  • Treatment of existing cracks and joints using specialized sealants
  • Application of the Drythane system with proper overlap and curing periods
  • Installation of additional protection layers in high-traffic areas
  • Quality control testing at each stage of application

The successful completion of this project in March 2022 not only demonstrated our expertise in handling sensitive restoration work but also showcased our ability to preserve and protect historically significant structures. The treatment has significantly enhanced the building's resistance to weathering, ensuring its continued service as a vital financial institution's headquarters. Post-treatment assessments have shown a complete elimination of previous water ingress issues, with the building maintaining its structural integrity even during Chennai's intense monsoon seasons.

This project stands as a testament to Amchem's commitment to delivering exceptional waterproofing solutions that respect and preserve architectural heritage while incorporating modern technological advancements in building protection. The success at IOB Headquarters has led to similar heritage restoration projects across South India, establishing Amchem as a trusted partner in architectural conservation efforts.

The project has received recognition from the architectural community for its sensitive approach to heritage conservation, and serves as a case study for similar restoration projects in the region. The IOB management has reported significant improvements in the building's internal environment and a reduction in maintenance costs, validating the effectiveness of our comprehensive waterproofing solution.
